How to visit Cenote Casa del Alux (2023) Puerto Aventura Riviera Maya

Cenote Casa del Alux is a pretty open cenote located in the town of Puerto Aventura only 24 km from Playa del Carmen.

We have just visited this precious cenote, a hidden gem of the Riviera Maya that not many people know about.

It’s located on the local side of Puerto Aventura Pueblo, opposite the more popular residential area.

To be completely honest, although it was a spectacular place immersed in the thriving jungle full of colorful birds, there were a few things about this cenote that made it lose scores (a lot).

So in this post, we will tell you all about it, the good and the bad. Read on!

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT CENOTE CASA DEL ALUX

Cenote Casa del Alux is an open cenote consisting of two natural swimming pools separated by a small cave that you can swim through, which is cool.

There is a small waterfall and two platforms to jump from, one for the kids and one for adults.

There are sitting areas sprinkled around the cenote where you can enjoy the cool breeze after swimming, but you are not allowed to bring food.

There are two platforms where you can jump from, one is only for kids because the bottom is not so deep, and one is for adults where the water is 6 mt depth.

This cenote doesn’t have the crystal-clear water that you would expect from a cenote, but it still looks good enough to make you want to jump in.

The owner of the place told me that in the winter the water is more transparent but I am not sure about it.

Cenote Casa del Alux overview

What are the cenotes?

A cenote is a freshwater sinkhole formed by the collapsing of limestone soil, the type of stone that the Yucatan Peninsula is mainly made of. The cenotes allow us access to the water table. These holes are produced naturally by the collapse of the roof.

Sacred to the Mayan civilization they are now some of the main tourist attractions in the Yucatan Peninsula. Read more about the Mexico cenotes.

Just follow Google Maps directions and you’ll get there.

THE BEST OF CASA DEL ALUX CENOTE

👍🏽 The best of Casa del Alux is the beautiful nature surrounding it, the chirping birds, and the small waterfall.

👍🏽 Also, we love that you can swim from one pool to the other through a small cave, and you can explore another natural cave at the end of the second natural pool.

THE WORST OF CENOTE CASA DEL ALUX

👎🏼 The water is murky so you can’t see the bottom.

👎🏼 But the worst thing about this cenote is the pump that’s pumping water for the cenote to provide for the village and it makes a constant annoying noise all day long.

It disrupts the quiet of the cenote and defeats the purpose of going to a cenote, in our opinion.

TIPS TO PHOTOGRAPH CENOTE CASA DEL ALUX

There are many beautiful corners that you can photograph, depending on what time of the day you are there. If you have a grand-angle lens, it will be even better.

If you want to capture the motion of the waterfall with long exposure, make sure you bring a tripod and neutral density filter.
